Pacific Pride Foundation’s Counseling & Recovery Services Program is proud to house an accredited internship program for M.A., Ph.D., and MFT interns studying clinical psychology, counseling psychology, community psychology, and marriage and family therapy. In addition to receiving a caseload of five clients per week, our interns receive intensive didactic training on working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender clients (LGBT) and on working with clients living with HIV/AIDS.
Time: Interns/Trainees are required to sign with us for 12 months (1 full year). Evaluations are made during every quarter by the Clinical Supervisor and the Director of Counseling Services.
Supervision Received: All interns receive two hours of weekly group supervision. Supervision is conducted by licensed professionals in our community who are experts in counseling LGBT clients and clients living with HIV/AIDS and have also been contacts with our agency for many years. Supervision usually occurs on Tuesdays from 11:00am – 1:00 pm in Santa Maria and on Fridays from 12:30pm – 2:30pm in Santa Barbara.
Commitment: We ask that trainees/interns work with us for approximately 10-14 hours a week. Though slow to start, interns usually carry a load of up to five weekly clients and act as a co-leader for one of our groups. Weekly trainees/intern time commitment averages:
- Individual Psychotherapy Provision: 5 hours
- Intern Group Supervision: 2 hours
- Case Management (phone calls, case notes, treatment plan writing): 3 hours
Once an intern number is assigned, the intern can increase his/her client load with consultation and approval from the Clinical Supervisor and Director of Counseling Services.
Staff: Our staff in counseling and recovery programs has been providing services in Santa Barbara County for over 30 years. Our counselors have come from professional psychology programs from all over the state, including students from: Antioch University, Pacifica Graduate Institute, UC-Santa Barbara, UC-Los Angeles, Claremont McKenna, and Chapman University.

Intern Training Seminars

These trainings are a required piece of our program and topics are to be determined by the Clinical Supervisor. Training topics may include: HIV 101 (Medical perspectives, clinical process, socioculture), Issues for Transgender Clients, Alcohol & Drug Abuse for LGBT Clients, Working with Same-Sex Couples, and Coming Out Issues for LGBT Clients.
