An intersex person is born with some or all genitalia of both sexes. The traditional practice in medicine was for the doctor to make the decision, do the operation, and then, perhaps, inform the parents of a "procedure." If informed, the parents were advised that, for the child to live a "normal" life, one set of sex equipment had to go.
However, the reported experience of intersex people on whom this operation was performed seems to be a permanent sense of loss. The ones who have spoken up are working toward abolishing the automatic decision that every person must be male or female with no in-between. This requires changing the attitude toward intersex persons, respecting their rights as human beings, in the medical profession and in the general public.
