Thoughts from the Executive Director's Desk Hello Friends and Colleagues, The Governor of California has decided to submit massive State budget cuts that will have devastating effects on local basic services for those with HIV/AIDS, the mentally ill, the extremely poor with chronic illness, prescription coverage and on and on. This threat is real and happening right now as our Finance Director and staff do damage control. The impact on our local HIV testing and education programs and our PPF nurses and social workers serving our clients will be enormous. These proposed cuts will be in the tens of thousands of dollars to our agency budget. Hit hard will be the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which provides life saving medications to hundreds of our HIV/AIDS diagnosed clients throughout the County of Santa Barbara. These are real life stories with those we serve: One mother in our program, with the AIDS virus taking care of her 3 children by cleaning hotel rooms cannot afford the costly medications to sustain her life. Massive cuts to our County Mental Health programs will leave our HIV clients, literally wandering on our streets without treatment. Proposed cuts to City and County housing supportive services will ensure these fragile populations stay right there – on our streets. Hundreds of clients and families on our caseloads will be left with little help. In the late 1980’s when I started this work, funerals of friends and PPF clients were the order of the day and long obituary columns filled with young lives. The very reason AIDS is not an immediate death sentence with a person lucky to live 6 months to a year are these life saving medications and supportive services. Are we to return to those times? If we are to assess ourselves as a community and a State with the 5th largest economy in the world – how are we doing in taking care of our most fragile and vulnerable populations? Where is the measuring stick for this question? Okay, what can all of us do? Speak-up, call our State Legislature and our Representatives; flood the Governors office with phone calls and letters saying this is not only unacceptable but cruel. The real life sin in all this is if we quietly acquiesce. Respectfully,
